What is that thing?

So you walk past a shop in the mall and spots this funny looking box stuck to the window and you think ‘What is that THING?’ Well, if it is black and white and looks like a pixelated patch, it’s a QR Code.

What Does A QR Code Do?

A QR Code is like a link, a web URL. All you need is a smart phone like an Android, Blackberry or iPhone that has a QR Code reader installed in it. A QR Code reader is necessary to ‘read’ the QR Code. Basically, a code can contain data or a link to any link on the internet. The ‘links’ are created for free using QR Code generators like this one.

There are so many bar codes out there, why this one is so cool?

Well, it’s made of funny little squares. Seriously, the most important thing for us (the users) is the fact that it’s two dimensional. 2D barcodes contain more information than conventional one dimensional linear barcodes. Conventional barcodes get wider as more data is encoded. 2D barcodes make use of the vertical dimension to pack in more data.

They store more information you say, so how much?

In short, if you stored only numeric data, you can store up to 7,089 characters within the QR Codes. With binary data (8 bits), the little squares can store up to 2,953 bytes of information. Alphanumeric, 4,296 characters and Kanji/Kana up to 1,817 characters. For a little square like that, THAT is a lot.

OK, great but what’s in it for me?

Here’s how QR Codes can change the way we live our lives.  While riding the train, you could stumble upon an advertisement for a new book, movie, or album that you are maybe curious about.  There is a web URL there but you would have to wait until you get to the office or home to check it out.  The problem is by the time you get home or to work, you can’t for the life of you remember what the URL is anymore.

How do I make use of QR Codes in everyday life?

You don’t have to be a business owner in order to benefit from this technology. However, if you ARE a business person, it is an incredibly versatile and FREE technology that is available to you. A wave of acceptance is sure to hit this part of the world as soon as more people become aware of its many great uses.

I don’t have a scanner, what do I do?

The most beautiful thing about the internet is that it’s where everything is. Head over to the link that we have just given you, select one of the QR Code readers, download it, install it into your mobile phone and you are ready to hit the ground scanning.

How does this really work?

  1. Load your QR Code reader and wait for it to get ready. When it is ready….
  2. With a steady hand, point your camera at it. You need to keep a steady hand (some people use both hands) to scan the QR Code so that the resulting scan is not blurry.
  3. Snap a picture of the QR Code.
  4. Bear in mind, you need to keep the whole QR Code inside the frame.
  5. The QR Code reader might take a few seconds to resolve the link for you.
